Narrative and Curatorial Photography
Brief summary
This project consists of a horizontal layout that illustrates a narrative focusing on one or more of the following qualities: shape, texture, pattern, colour and tonal values. A narrative as a ‘concept’ is curated through the use of photography. The layouts consist of both documentary photography and fashion photography. The aim of this project is to capture scenes that are visually striking and to use these photographs to convey a narrative.
Project deliverables
A curated series of five images:
- Three greyscale documentary images
- Two greyscale or colour fashion images
Design strategy
The curated series emphasises the visual qualities of tone, shape and pattern to highlight the models uniqueness and beauty in comparison to mundane everyday qualities and experiences around us. The documentary images captured everyday life, from the worn out pedestrian crossing, water flowing down a slanted pavement to a shadow cast by a tree. There is a rhythm within these documentary images to create repetition and form. The fashion photography presence portrays elegance, sophistication and class. All the attention is drawn to the model rather than having a busy background or surrounding. The fashion photographs emphasise the shape, form and texture. Particular images are cropped to draw attention to the shape and pattern within the frame. The sequence’s narrative is guided by visual qualities but ultimately still remains up for subjective interpretation of the viewer. This allows the viewer to engage with the piece by creating their own visual connections and evokes their own feelings from the narrative and curatorial photography.
Process photography
The documentary images present everyday mundane life, with an emphasis on capturing that specific moment in time. For example, the worn out road markings are something we see daily. Shadows are also something we see daily. The fashion photography captures the uniqueness and expressiveness of the model.
